Capoeira is art and strength. It’s the only family affair that everyone can join in from the ages of 3 to 100 to explore and express themselves. Over the years, my three children have embraced capoeira with all their hearts. They truly believe capoeira is fundamentally about the roda of life, when you devote to capoeira, the more capoeira will return to you. Owned and operated by one of the world’s most accomplished and inspiring capoeira mestres, the Axé Capoeira Academy here in Victoria is a unique and incredible space in which you can learn and grow in this magnificent art. I (nervously!) joined the adult beginner classes after being inspired by watching my children learn from their incredible instructor. Training is open to all ages and abilities, and the community is stronger for it. The dedicated teaching that takes place in the academy instructs us in every aspect of capoeira: the movements, the history, music, culture and language. While capoeira training can take place anywhere - in a field, in a community centre, etc. - Axé Capoeira Victoria is uniquely situated in a dedicated space - an academy - in which the seasoned AND the beginner can call Home!

I'm the strongest I've ever been after only training for one year. I come 3 times a week and I am still amazed at where I am some days and have to pause to just fully appreciate what I've overcome and give praise to those who have supported me on this journey. I've never been one to "stay in my lane" or give up so despite having to deal with arthritis, endometriosis, tinnitus, arrhythmia & postural hypotension, anxiety disorder, migraines, severe depression, ptsd...I joined the most intense amazing martial art I had ever seen! The wisdom, passion, integrity, and kindness demonstrated by Mestrando Testa is unlike anything I've ever had in a mentor or teacher. I wouldn't be who I am today if not for his dedication and tenacity, and making sure we all had access to training and connection to our community during the isolation of the last few years. Magic happens when someone believes in you.
